This post of Jennifer's made me remember something I've been pondering. As I know that Peanut understands more and more of what I say (which is sort of starting to freak me out), I am trying to emphasize to her stuff like "Are you pooping? You are pooping." so she associates what she is doing with the proper term. I by no means think she is ready to potty train, don't get me wrong, but I want to get it in her head so she's cognizant of what she's doing. I've been considering going ahead and buying a potty chair so in a few months I can put it out and she can get used to it.
Turns out, though, I know absolutely nothing about potty training and potty chairs, so I turn to you, oh wise ones. Are all potty chairs created equal? Is there anything special I should be looking for or is a tiny crapper a tiny crapper?

I did that with Zachariah. Before he was 1, he would tell us when he was pooping (it was easy for us to see he was). So right after his first birthday I went out and bought a potty. I didn't really look into any particular kind, just whatever was out there. I did avoid one with all the big attachment "toys" on the sides. That would be WAY too much distraction for my son.
He now knows what the potty is, how to sit on it (he even knows he has to pull the little pee flap up for him), and that we go pee and poop on the potty. Are we potty training? No. He's not quite ready for that yet. Has he gone on the potty? Yes, once. I caught him at the perfect time. While he didn't protest (he did before that), he didn't seem to get too excited about it. And we made a huge deal about it. He will sometimes want to sit on the potty, but nothing happens. And that's ok. I think it's great that he's interested now.
Good luck.
Well, we ended up getting some Fisher Price potty that "sings a royal tune" and...it's pretty annoying. So I guess my (worthless) advice is: NOT THAT ONE.
Thank you for sending that Amazon link about the Bjorn potty chair. I was reading in the reviews that another customer hated the same chair I bought for the same reason I hate it (small opening). Gah. How are we supposed to know this stuff? Why didn't I think to ask the all-knowing Internetz before purchasing a stupid chair?

Don't ask me... My children were old enough to make me feel like a horrible parent for waiting so long to potty train them. I think we got the Fisher Price one that then converts to a step stool and seat insert. My kids were both well past...er... 3 when they were completely potty trained but neither one of them ever had an accident.
Oh holy hell, I hadn't even thought that potty training was coming soon.

We had the Baby Bjorn potty for Spencer, but he never liked it and preferred a potty ring on the regular toilet. So I got rid of it and then with Ginger picked up one kind of like this

at a kids' secondhand store. She loved it and we still keep it in the car for emergencies.
Okay, I have the most awesome thing ever, and guess what? I don't know where you can buy it. We bought it at a specialty store at a mall thousands of miles from where we now live! Isn't that HELPFUL?
Anyway, it's a potty seat that screws onto the toilet between the lid and the seat. So it flips up and down, you don't have to (1) find a place for a potty seat and clean it out all the time OR (2) snap one on and off the toilet all the time.
But where can you buy such a thing? Beats me. Ours is 9 years old. I bought it at a place with a name like The Right Start or One Step Ahead or The Right Step or One Start or SOMETHING.
I think our potty chair was a fisher price that converted to a step stool. It worked well for my daughter but by the time my son was born we had lost the little boy piece that went in front to prevent pee from going on the floor. So we had a lot of pee on the floor until we taught him to stand on the stool and pee in the big potty. Good luck, I was sort of inconsistant with how I trained my kids. One day m&m rewards next stickers, but they did OK. I suppose I will hear about it when they start therapy.
I'm betting Swistle's chair thing came from One Step Ahead, which is a children's product company that sends me catalogues all the time. A lot of their stuff is awesome. Maybe try to look for it on their website?
